In the context of the European Social Dialogue between workers and employers in the furniture sector, the European Federation of Building and Woodworkers (EFBWW), the European Furniture Manufacturers Federation (UEA) and the European Furniture Industries Federation (EFIC) ran a joint project to map current uses and near future perspective on nano-materials in the European furniture sector, about innovative materials and potentials of the new technology that may positively affect the furniture sector and to inform about possible health risks and steps towards workplace prevention strategies following the precautionary principle.
The main goal of the project was to provide useful information for practitioners, mainly social partners at company level, social partner organisations at national level, safety experts and prevention institutions.
Research activities were done by the Dutch institute “IVAM Research and consultancy on Sustainability” (IVAM UvB BV) consisting of collecting information on the actual use of nano-materials in the sector, expert interviews, measurements on workplace exposure to nanoparticles in some work-processes and the evaluation of best practices in workplace prevention strategies.
