European Parliament adopted the Andersson Report
22 October 2008 the European Parliament adopted the so called Andersson Report by 474 voting in favour, 106 against and 93 abstentions. By this adoption, the Parliament urged the European Commission to review EU law in order to ensure equal pay for equal work. The call came after several judgments in the European Court of Justice that challenged the balance between the economic freedoms and the protection of workers. Jan Andersson, the chairman of the Parliament Employment Committee, who drafted the Report, said: “It is now up to the European legislators to restore the balance between economic freedoms and social rights.” And Stephen Hughes, Labour MEP and spokesman for Employment and Social policy, said “It is now time for the Commission to act. The European Commission needs to confirm and show the citizens that the EU is working for social progress and not against it. This will be a key issue for the Socialist group when electing the next Commission and its President.”
