|At 15 June the European Works Council of the ETEX Group has adopted a health and safety charter. Workers representative and the management of the group signed an agreement which covers both, requirements regarding the health and safety organization and the representation and participation of workers as well as specific requirements regarding diverse hazards.
To include strong requirements regarding the participation of workers and their individual rights was a central issue for the workers representatives. This aim was not only to implement formal rights and to include the spirit of participation in a written document but also to carry an accordingly practise and culture in all the companies factories.
The discussions and negotiations on the charter have been initiated by the workers representatives and were accompanied by practical activities during the duration of negotiations.
The innovative nature of the agreement is its detailed provisions regarding the companies health and safety organisation and its clear recognition that the improvement of health and safety is not attainable via hierarchical proceedings but only by an active involvement of all employees.
